Program Notes:
Cutting the Circle was written in 1997 for the oboe and piano duo Equinox. The
title of the work comes from the Jackson Pollock painting Moon Woman Cuts the Circle.
The work is dedicated to the composer Frederick Fox, with whom I studied and whose music and
words continue to be an influence on me, on the occassion of his retirement. The circle may be
cut, but the circle has no end.
