Whatcom Ride (2004) is a one-movement work for chamber orchestra characterized by an underlying rhythmic energy and sense of forward motion. Simple musical motives are playfully developed, layered, and transformed to create contrasting sections. These musical scenes, propelled by a single kinetic force, might be analogous to the passing views from a moving vehicle (boat, plane, car, train, bike, snowboard…). Whatcom Ride was commissioned by Roger Briggs and the Whatcom Symphony Orchestra and is dedicated to the City of Bellingham for its centennial celebration.
