Program Notes: Still Life was conceived as a form of therapy following the completion of a large and difficult piece. The basic idea was to write a short, relatively simple solo work which would sustain a fairly subdued mood from start to finish; no hyper-kinetic rhythm, no hammering punctuation, and above all, no possible association with the word frenzy. The piece is essentially an arch form, with the slow melancholic lines of the outer sections set off by more incisive gestures in the middle.
